Name the country

How to play Name the country

One territory is highlighted in black on a historical map. Type the name it had at that time: not today’s name. Hover over or tap the rest of the map to see the other countries of that moment, which often gives the game away. You get three tries, and hints if you need them.

Examples of what you’ll meet

  • States that broke up, such as the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia.
  • Colonies and mandates, such as Mandatory Palestine or South West Africa (Namibia since 1990).
  • Renamed countries, such as Swaziland (Eswatini since 2018).

After each answer you learn what happened next and which countries the territory is part of today, with a source.

Does today’s name count?
No: the game asks for the name at the time of the map. Where two names were equally correct then, both count, with a note explaining why.
How hard is it?
Pick easy, medium or hard. There are at least ten territories at every level.
